A weekly Devotional based on the sermon "Time" by Scott Heikes
5-Day Devotional: Redeeming Time for God's Glory Day 1: Time as God's Gift Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8; Psalm 90:12
Devotional: Every moment we breathe is a sacred gift from our Creator. The rhythmic poetry of Ecclesiastes reminds us that God has ordained seasons for everything under heaven. Yet how often do we sleepwalk through our days, treating time as an endless resource? Moses' prayer teaches us to "number our days" - not to breed anxiety, but to cultivate wisdom. When we recognize that our 2.5 billion seconds are finite, we stop squandering them on trivial pursuits. Today, pause and thank God for this very moment. Ask Him to open your eyes to the preciousness of now, for this day will never come again.
Day 2: Stewarding Your Hours Reading: Ephesians 5:15-17; Colossians 4:5
Devotional: Paul urges believers to walk carefully, "making the most of every opportunity." We are stewards, not owners, of our time. God will ask us to account for how we invested these irreplaceable hours. Did we spend them building His kingdom or our own? The challenge isn't merely busyness, but purposefulness. Examine your calendar and habits honestly. Where does your time actually go? Prayerfully identify one area where you're wasting time and one way you can redirect those hours toward eternal purposes. Remember: what you do with your time reveals what you truly value.
Day 3: Priorities and the Kingdom Reading: Matthew 6:25-34; Luke 10:38-42
Devotional: Jesus taught that seeking God's kingdom first realigns all other priorities. Martha's anxious busyness contrasted sharply with Mary's focused devotion. Both women loved Jesus, but only one chose "what is better." Are you so consumed with activity that you've neglected intimacy with God? Productivity without purpose is just motion. Today, deliberately set aside unhurried time for prayer and Scripture. Resist the tyranny of the urgent. Create margin in your schedule for what matters eternally. When you prioritize communion with Christ, He orders everything else. The kingdom isn't built through frantic striving but faithful abiding.
Day 4: Living with Eternal Perspective Reading: James 4:13-17; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Devotional: James confronts our presumption about tomorrow: "You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." This isn't pessimism but realism. Mortality gives life meaning, urgency, and beauty. Paul understood this, fixing his eyes not on temporary things but eternal realities. How would you live differently if you knew this was your last year? Month? Week? Don't wait for a crisis to prioritize what matters. Live today with heaven in view. Invest in relationships, serve sacrificially, share the gospel boldly. Your earthly life is the only chance you have to store up eternal treasures.
Day 5: Redeeming the Time for His Glory Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:31; Romans 14:7-8
Devotional: "Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God." Every moment - mundane or magnificent - can become an offering of worship. Paul declared, "If we live, we live for the Lord." This transforms time from a commodity to be managed into a canvas for displaying God's beauty. Your daily work, family interactions, rest, and service all matter eternally when done for Christ. As your hourglass empties, will your life have pointed others to Jesus? Today, consciously dedicate each hour to His glory. Live intentionally, love extravagantly, and leave a legacy of faithfulness.
